데이터분석 해외대학 온라인 석사 정보 - 조지아텍

슬기로운 의사생활 마지막 편을 보다가 "42살에 '소아 소장'에 대해 연구해 보고 싶어서 미국으로 1년 떠난다" 정원(유연석)의 한마디 때문에 급 삘이 꽂혀서 검색하던 내용을 내가 나중에 참고하려고 살짝 남겨본다.

30대 중반에 대학원? 코로나 시국인데?

의식의 흐름은 대략 이렇다.
지난 몇 년 계속 마음 한켠에 시도해 보고 싶었는데 구체화시키질 못했던 대학원. 아직도 뭔가 건드리다 마는듯한 애매한 포지션으로 ML 실습을 건드려보며 클라우드도 만지작 거렸다가 매일 공부는 그래도 꾸준히 하는 중이지만. 뭔가 깊게 파고 싶은 갈증이 있는 상태. But 코로나 시국 아닌가. 인공지능 대학원이 계속해서 국내에 설립되고 있지만 대부분 전일제고, 야간의 경우는 오랜 서치의 대략적인 분위기는 깊게 파고드는 데는 한계가 있고 워낙 핫한 분야지만 교수진 모시기도 어려운 한국 현실에 야간반 직장인들까지 케어가 제대로 될까 싶다.

AI 학문의 주류는 누가 뭐래도 미국이 리딩하고 있고, 논문이든 알고리즘이든 뭐든간에 다 영어 베이스고, 꼬리에 꼬리를 물면서 찾아서 공부할 자신은 있는데 가이드가 되어줄 학교라는 울타리가 있었으면 좋겠고 일을 하면서 빡세게 공부도 하고 싶고.

독학할 때도 대부분 영어 강의 코세라나 유튜브 찾아 듣는 판에, 또 대부분의 한국 내의 교육과정의 커리큘럼에서도 교재든 강의안이든 해외강의에서 코멘트를 가져오거나 자료들도 해외 강연인데 그럼 온라인으로 해외 석사도 가능하지 않을까? 그리고 지금도 대학이나 대학원에서 줌으로 학사일정이 진행되는 곳들이 많은데 이러나저러나 온라인 학습은 시대의 흐름?

야간 인공지능 관련 대학원의 경우 최소 한학기 등록금이 800만 원 이상이고 (대신에 전일제의 경우는 뽑히기만 하면 장학금이 주어지는 게 대부분) 생돈 내 돈을 내면서 투자 대비 4 or 5학기 후 그다음 스텝은 어떻게 될 것인가? 프리랜서로 일하면서 나만의 비즈니스화로도 연결시켜 보고 싶은 목표를 가장 잘 충족시켜 줄 방향은 어떤 것일까? 라는 의식의 흐름으로 검색해본 온라인 해외 석사 과정 정보들을 정리해 본다. (계속해서 업데이트)

1. 조지아텍 OMSA

가장 많이 언급되던 조지아텍의 OMSA 과정을 예전에 한창 서칭할 때도 흘려 봤었는데 오늘 처음 홈페이지에 들어가서 일정 및 서류들을 읽어보다 보니 일단 토플이나 아이엘츠 점수부터 만들고, 비전공자지만 선형대수나 통계 및 컴퓨팅 지식을 증명할 만한 사전 코스들의 증명서들도 필요하겠고 준비할 게 많은데?

Online Master of Science in Analytics 2022년 가을학기 지원기준으로 홈페이지에 나와있는 정보들을 정리해보면 다음과 같다. (이미 내년도 봄학기 접수는 8월 1일에 끝남)

1) 22년 가을학기 접수 일정 (Fall Enrollment)
- FALL STANDARD APPLICATION DEADLINE : Feb 1, 2022
- FALL FINAL APPLICATION DEADLINE : Mar 15, 2022

2) 입학 필수 조건 Prerequisites
- 1. An undergraduate Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a regionally accredited institution. 학사 학위
- 2. At least one college-level course or equivalent knowledge in: 아래 세가지 영역 관련 최소 하나라도 학사 수준 course 이수 혹은 그 수준의 지식

• Probability/statistics
• Computer programming in Python at the level of Introduction to Computing in Python*
• Calculus and basic linear algebra**

*Even if you have experience in some high-level language -- C, C++, Java, Python, FORTRAN -- it still would be helpful to take Introduction to Computing in Python prior to starting the OMS Analytics coursework. (링크는 edx 강의)

**Applicants who lack a background in mathematics or computing may still be admitted. In these cases, students are expected either to learn the necessary materials on their own before beginning the program, or take one or more preparatory course after being admitted.
수학 혹은 컴퓨팅 백그라운드가 부족해도 지원할 수는 있음. 그 경우 프로그램 시작 전에 선수학습하거나 입학 후에 별도 코스 수강할 수 있음

Applicants who are selected for admission will be conditionally admitted into the degree program and must pass the two OMS Analytics foundational courses with a grade of B or better to be fully admitted. Students do not need to take these foundational courses before registering for other core or elective courses. However, we recommend students take at least one foundational course per semester in which they are enrolled until they are fully admitted to Georgia Tech.

3) Test Scores (Optional) 테스트 점수는 선택사항
You  may choose to submit standardized test scores, most commonly GRE or GMAT. However, this is not required for admission into the program.


4) Online Application  온라인 지원

Admission is a competitive process and we carefully review all facets of your application. The information you include in your application assists our admissions committee in evaluating your potential for success in the program. Your application will not be reviewed until all of your supporting documents have been submitted, including unofficial transcripts, TOEFL scores (if applicable), and letters of recommendation. Documents submitted after the application deadline will not be reviewed.

5) 입학 신청 제출 서류

온라인 프로그램이므로 US 시민권자든 외국인이든 모두 international applicant로 간주하며, 학생 비자는 제공되지 않음.
International applicants can:

• provide proof of citizenship from an approved country listed here
• provide a transcript from a regionally accredited university or college located in the United States reflecting a minimum of one academic year (3 quarters or 2 semesters) of full-time enrollment
• provide a transcript from a university or college located in one of these listed countries reflecting a minimum of one academic year (3 quarters or 2 semesters) of full-time enrollment 링크된 국가에서 학사 학위가 있거나 시민권 가지고 있으면 영어 성적 면제. But 나는 영어권이 아닌 한국 학사니 토플이나 아이엘츠가 필수다.
• Applicants not meeting any of the above criteria who studied at a school where the language of instruction is English but the country in which the school is located is not listed here are required to submit acceptable standardized test scores as outlined below.
• If you do not meet any of the above listed criteria, you will be required to submit a standardized test score to satisfy the English Language Proficiency requirement.

최소 공인 영어점수

Our program-pecific accepted tests and minimum score requirement for admission are listed below. Please note that meeting Georgia Tech’s minimum score does not guarantee admission since some programs (such as this one) have higher score requirements.

• Official IELTS Academic test score (send scores to Georgia Institute of Technology, "Graduate")
• * IELTS ≥ 7.5 overall (with a minimum band score for Reading, Listening, and Speaking of 6.5; minimum band score for Writing is 6.0)
• Official internet based (iBT) TOEFL score (send scores to Georgia Institute of Technology, "Graduate", institute code 5248) ** TOEFL iBT ≥ 100 overall (with each section also scoring 20 or higher)

Transcripts 준비 서류

Georgia Tech requires the following documents from international applicants:

• Official native- language transcripts from every college/university attended for credit, even if that credit wasn’t earned or was transferred to another school
• Official English translation of the native language transcript
• Official native language degree documents
• Official English translation of the native language degree document

6) 수업 비용
가장 중요한 고려 요소중의 하나가 바로 비용이다. 물론 온오프의 차이가 분명 있겠지만 만불 언저리로 학위취득 가능.

한국어로 검색해도 사례는 희박하니 레딧 좀 정독하면서 분위기를 살펴보고 추가로 얻는 정보들은 계속 정리. 온라인 석사라고 해도 GRE 점수가 필수가 아니다는 것 빼곤 다 있어야 하는 아주 까다로운 느낌? 온라인 과정이니 중도 하차의 위험성은 항상 도래하므로 유경험자들 사례들을 좀 더 파봐야겠음.
